Guyana holds first heavy equipment training camp for children
(Kaieteur News) – J&W Training and Consultancy has wrapped up Guyana’s first heavy equipment training camp designed specifically for children, capping off a week that also marked the company’s third anniversary.
The five-day camp ran from Monday 3rd August, to Friday 7th August, and brought together 17 children between the ages of 12 and 15. Organisers built the programme around classroom lessons, hands-on practice, simulator technology and interactive activities, giving participants an early look at heavy equipment operation, workplace safety and possible career paths in the industry.

According to a statement, six trainers guided participants through hands-on sessions with three major pieces of equipment: a hydraulic excavator, a skid steer loader and a compactor roller. Children learned basic machine controls and operations, along with why pre-operation inspections and safety procedures matter before any machine is switched on.
Safety instruction ran throughout the camp. Takchandra Safety Solutions gave a presentation on job-site safety, showing participants how good safety habits can prevent accidents and protect workers. Titans Safety Solutions Inc. followed with a practical fire safety demonstration, teaching children how to use a fire extinguisher and letting them operate one under supervision.

A dedicated RC control section let children try their hand at remote-controlled excavators, trucks and bulldozers. A heavy equipment simulator, linked to a large television screen, gave participants the chance to virtually operate different types of machinery, building coordination and muscle memory in a controlled setting.
The camp was organised as part of J&W Training and Consultancy’s third-anniversary celebrations. Since it began operating, the company has grown to four locations across Georgetown, Linden, Berbice and Essequibo, and has trained close to 500 operators.

The programme closed Friday with a certificate ceremony recognising all 17 participants for completing the camp. Managing Director Chavez John formally declared the 2026 Heavy Equipment Training Camp closed.
The company thanked its sponsors and partners — Buckingham Trucking, Takchandra Safety Solutions, SBE (Superior Building and Engineering), Titans Safety Solutions Inc., Amani RC, and M. Persaud & Son Construction and Machine Rental — for supporting the initiative.
Following the camp’s success, J&W Training and Consultancy said it plans to make the programme an annual event during the August school holidays, with hopes of expanding it to reach more young people in future years.

12-15 years old children at a Heavy Machinery Training Camp ? I thought my
eyes were playing tricks on me, reading this.
They have trained 500 so far, issued certificates of their training.
However, these “youngsters” are not yet ready to actually hold down a job
operating heavy equipment- after just 5 days LEARNING, hands-on lectures
etc. A longer Training/working under experienced operators on job sites, or
training school, obtaining legal Operator’s License for Heavy Machinery(listed)
prior to obtaining job.
