(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh if yuh really want know how much people value dem country, don’t ask fuh speech, anthem or flag-waving. Just tek a walk round Parliament Building.
Is only in Guyana yuh could pass de National Assembly and got to wonder if yuh deh by de highest law-making body in de land or if yuh accidentally end up in one giant bus terminal.
Dem boys seh two whole sides of Parliament – de west and de south – get tek over by buses and vendors till de place looking like it applying fuh market licence.
Now imagine if somebody decide to park a minibus behind Buckingham Palace. Before de driver could holler, “One more passenger!”, police done asking he if he lose he mind. Yet we behaving like Parliament backyard is public parking lot.
Is no wonder, de National Assembly meeting elsewhere. There is hardly place for the members of parliament to park.
Dem boys seh de irony sweet like cane juice. Inside Parliament, members are supposed to be debating national development. Outside Parliament, traffic debating who gon move first.
Inside, people supposed to be discussing governance. Outside, vendors and vagrants governing de pavement.
Inside, laws are supposed to be getting passed. Outside, everybody passing wherever dem feel like. And nobody seem to find dat strange.
Dem boys seh if yuh surround yuh highest democratic institution with congestion, noise and confusion, don’t be surprise if people start treating democracy itself like just another roadside operation.
Parliament is supposed to command respect. Instead, de poor building got to compete with conductors shouting destinations every thirty seconds. ” Sometimes dem boys seh de Speaker might need a louder microphone than de bus conductors.
And leh nobody misunderstand. This ain’t about hardworking vendors or drivers trying to mek a dollar. Is about planning. Every city got to decide what belongs where. If everything belong everywhere, then nowhere got any importance.
Dem boys seh nationhood ain’t only waving a Golden Arrowhead pon Republic Day. Nationhood is deciding dat some places deserve dignity simply because of what dem represent. If we can’t preserve de surroundings of de building where de country’s laws get made, then what exactly are we preserving?
Dem boys seh maybe one day somebody gon realise dat Parliament need some breathing room. Because a nation’s dignity can’t always find parking.
Talk half. Leff half.
