Kaieteur Sports – Two clinical wins for Essequibo Islands and Yarrakabra Secondary Schools, headlined Sunday’s two respective Zone finals as teams rallied towards the final stages of the competition.
Essequibo Islands beat West Demerara by 9 wickets: In a lopsided affair of the Zone 2 Region 3 finals at Uitvlugt, Essequibo Islands destroyed West Demerara by 9 wickets in the low-scoring morning match, after the latter was strangled for 27-10 after 13.2 overs.
It was a batting collapse as no player got to double figures as Jeremiah Garnett’s 4 runs ended up being the top score, as Aarav Sukhram ended with amazing figures of 5-1 with support from national youth all-rounder Bhomesh Lall (4-5).
The aforementioned pair then returned to mop up the runs as Sukhram (6*) and Lall (4) alongside top-scorer Jimaul Whyte (9*), saw their side to 28-1 in just the third over.
Covent Garden beat Yarrakabra by 24 runs: The second of two finals, the afternoon match saw the eventual winners batting first in the Zone 3 finals.
Covent Garden posted a formidable 111-10 in 14.5 overs after Navindranauth Ram (25), Terick Jadgeo (24) and Nazeem Lehan (10*) led the batting charge.
Bowling for Yarrakabra was spearheaded by the trio of Arjune Lokenauth (3-14), Nicholl Morris (3-24) and Ajay Gordall (2-20) who did well but managed to somehow see their team fall for just 87 runs in almost the same amount of overs 14.3; thanks to equally clinical bowling.
Man-of-the-match from Saturday’s game, Vinesh Kaploo, was the star again bagging 3-24 while Ram (2-18) and Jadgeo (2-27), backed up their good batting with some top ball work.
