NA man granted $700,000 bail on firearm, drug charges
(Kaieteur News) – A New Amsterdam, Berbice taxi driver was on Friday granted $700,000 bail when he appeared before the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on charges involving the alleged possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and a quantity of cannabis.

Ryan Lewis, 38, of Shoe Lane, New Amsterdam, was arraigned before Magistrate Michelle Matthias, where he denied the charges of unlawful possession of a firearm without a licence and unlawful possession of ammunition without a licence, both brought under Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05 of the Laws of Guyana.
He was granted $400,000 bail for the firearm charge and $300,000 for the ammunition charge, totalling $700,000. The matter was adjourned to 6th July, 2026.
Lewis was arrested last Tuesday following a police operation in Region Six, during which ranks allegedly discovered a firearm, ammunition, and a quantity of suspected cannabis at his residence.
Police said the operation was carried out based on information received. During the search, officers reportedly found several transparent plastic-wrapped parcels containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa stored in two blue plastic barrels.
Investigators said Lewis admitted ownership of the narcotics when questioned.
A further search of the premises led to the discovery of a silver-coloured revolver along with six matching rounds of ammunition inside a wooden chest of drawers. The weapon was identified as a .38 special revolver bearing serial number UA852487.
The suspected cannabis was weighed in the accused man’s presence at the Central Police Station and amounted to 14.650 kilograms. Samples were taken from the parcels, sealed in evidence bags, and lodged for forensic analysis.
The firearm and ammunition were also sealed and lodged for ballistic testing as investigations continue.
