‘Because We Care’ cash grant distribution begins today
(Kaieteur News) – Parents and guardians of children registered in Guyana’s public and private school system will begin receiving the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant from today.
Each eligible child will receive a total of $85,000, this year following an increase in the grant and the introduction of a new transportation subsidy. The cash grant has been increased from $50,000 to $60,000, while the school uniform grant remains at $5,000, bringing the total education grant to $65,000. With the addition of the new $20,000 transportation grant, every child in the public and private school system will receive $85,000.

In a message on Sunday, Minister of Education Sonia Parag urged parents and guardians to check the distribution schedule for their children’s schools.
“So, parents, I hope you know the schedule for your child’s school, and that you will be present there, whether it’s tomorrow or the other days, which will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and ensure that you show up there. I know that this is going to be of great benefit to you, because you want your child or children to be in a position to attend school in September, and this is going to assist them with whatever they need to get back to school to be properly prepared for school, so we’re looking forward to seeing you,” the minister noted.
Parag, along with other ministers and officials from the Ministry of Education, will visit several schools to monitor the distribution process and ensure it proceeds smoothly.
Parents and guardians are also being reminded to take along a national identification card or valid passport when collecting the grant. For those who will be unable to make it, the ministry said, “Be sure to write the required authorisation letter for the person who will be collecting the grant on your child’s behalf.”
