(Kaieteur News) – A 37-year-old security guard was shot dead on Thursday afternoon while on duty at Lida Supermarket, located at Sussex Street, Georgetown.
Dead is Esan Rose, of Laing Avenue, who was employed with CMC Security Service. According to police, the incident occurred at about 3:05 p.m. while Rose was inside the supermarket, approximately five feet from the southern entrance. He was armed with a 9mm service pistol and a magazine containing nine rounds of ammunition.
Investigators said a man wearing a surgical mask and armed with a handgun, approached the supermarket as a pillion rider on a red-and-white XR motorcycle. The pillion rider reportedly disembarked after the motorcycle travelled west along Sussex Street. The motorcycle then continued east along the street while the suspect entered the supermarket.
Police said the suspect discharged two rounds in Rose’s direction, striking him once to the chest. Rose fell to the ground and the gunman fled the supermarket, heading west along Sussex Street before turning north onto Charles Street. An EMT was summoned, but Rose was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Harikissoon of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Police said Rose was found lying on his back, dressed in a cream jersey, black long pants and black boots. Blood stains were observed on his face and jersey. His service pistol was found on the ground near his body, along with the nine live 9mm rounds in the magazine.
Police investigators recovered one spent .32 shell and two live .32 rounds at the scene. The items were marked, sealed and lodged, while Rose’s service firearm and ammunition were also lodged. CCTV footage from inside the supermarket captured the incident and was extracted by investigators. The scene was subsequently processed by ranks from the Police Force’s Crime Scene Unit. Police said additional CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being reviewed at the Command Centre as efforts continue to identify and locate the suspect, the motorcycle and its rider. Several persons have been questioned as investigations continue. Rose’s body was escorted to Memorial Gardens, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, when Kaieteur News arrived on a scene a large crowd had gathered while police were processing the scene. A close relative explained that news of Rose’s shooting came as a surprise to them. “All we hearing is that they just came shot him and they left. The shooter didn’t take anything. The police ain’t telling we nothing they say that we got to wait till the investigations done,” the relative said.
