Child rape, high-profile murders for Berbice High Court
…as June Assizes opens
(Kaieteur News) – Multiple high-profile murders and an expansive log of rape cases are lined up for hearing as the June Criminal Assizes officially opened at the Berbice High Court in New Amsterdam.
Justice Simone Morris officially inspected the guard of honor at the formal commencement, and is expected to preside over various matters.

The ceremony was attended by the heads of the Joint Services in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Mayor of New Amsterdam, Wainwright McIntosh, Deputy Mayor Kirk Fraser, and Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Six, Ronald Harsaywack.
Over 40 persons are expected to face court as the June Assizes prepares to adjudicate about 19 murder cases.

The February Assizes saw the commencement of the long-awaited case into the murders of Isaiah and Joel Henry. That matter, which lasted for just over a month, is now complete, with the two accused, Vinod Gopaul and Anil Sanchara found guilty by the jury for the September, 2020 killing. Sentencing is scheduled for later this month.
Not too distant from that matter is that of Haresh Singh, 17, who was brutally killed in what many deem to be a revengeful murder in response to the Henry boys’ shocking murders.

Four men were arrested in relation to Singh’s murder. This matter is expected to be heard in the June Assizes.
There are also at least five manslaughter and seven attempted murder matters.
On the other hand, over 40 cases of rape are fixed for hearing. An alarmingly high percentage of child-based sexual offenses will be heard at the court, with over 30 such related cases to be tried.
Prosecuting these cases on behalf of the state is State Counsel Marisa Edwards.
