(Kaieteur News) – A porter has been charged with the murder of 69-year-old Mohammed Faizul Shaheed, a pensioner who was found dead on May 19 at his Parker Street, Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) home.
The accused, identified as 22-year-old Yannick Williams called ‘Lash-up’ appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court where the charge was read to him. He was not required to plead to the indictable offence and was remanded to prison.
Williams is scheduled to return to court on June 15.
Police believe that Shaheed was beaten to death between Saturday (May 16), and the day he was found dead.
An autopsy conducted on his remains found that he died from brain haemorrhage due to multiple blunt traumas to the head.
Police in a statement said, “Through diligent investigative work, intelligence gathering and the use of available technology, investigators were able to advance the investigation and identify several persons of interest”.
“As a result, a 19-year-old construction worker of Parker Street, Providence, East Bank Demerara and a 22-year-old porter of Back Street, Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara were arrested and placed into custody on Monday, May 25, 2026,” police further disclosed.
On Tuesday, police also arrested a 17-year-old also of Parker Street, Providence.
Police were told that Shaheed was last seen alive around 21:00hrs on May 16. On May 19, after calls to his phone went unanswered prompting relatives to visit his home, where he was found dead.
There were no signs of forced entry at Shaheed’s home.
His body was found in a state of decomposition.
