(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh the rain get up yesterday morning and decide it ain’t just coming down. It coming with attitude. And it had its partners in crime waiting. It look like if the coordinating their actions. High-intensity rain, spring tide, and the high tide all happen at the same time.
Dem boys seh is true the authorities been warning about spring tides. True too that the rain was heavy, like it had gym membership and personal trainer. And yes, the tide was high—higher than some people expectations and even higher than some of the excuses that been floating around after every flood.
But dem boys seh the question still remain: if all of this was known in advance, how come the system still behaving like it surprise?
We got pumps now. Fancy pumps. Expensive pumps. Pumps that could probably write their own procurement contract if we give them a chance. And dem pumps was supposed to be the backup when the tide decide it don’t want to behave.
We got canals too. Supposed to be cleaned, widened, and kept low so when rain fall like it vex, the water got somewhere to go. That was the whole idea—storage, flow, control, management. Big words that sound good in meetings.
But when the rain come, dem boys seh the system behaving like it never read the minutes of the last meeting.
And then comes the real problem: timing. Because dem boys seh a pump turning on late is like opening an umbrella after you done soak. Half hour delay and you don’t get puddles. You get ponds. You don’t get flooding. You get people rowing mentally to work.
Dem boys seh back in the old days, the colonial people didn’t have no fancy pumps. Just kokers. And they keep them clean. Simple system. And in Georgetown, one man used to ride bicycle in the rain from koker to koker like he training for the Olympics, just to make sure everything open on time. And guess what? He was never late. And the kokers was never late either.
Now we feel we smart. We scrap the old system because it look too simple. Only problem is, when the rain fall, simplicity does beat complexity every time.
Dem boys seh it might be time for an assessment—not just of the water, but of the system that supposed to move it.
Talk half. Leff half.
