Kaieteur Sports – Thirty-seven-year-old Robert Campbell was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 years in prison, weeks after he was convicted of sexual activity with a child.
The sentence was handed down by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Berbice High Court.
At the commencement of the trial, Campbell told the court that he was not guilty of the offense, for which he was initially out on bail. A 12-member jury was empanelled on April 8, 2026 for the matter. On April 14, the jury returned a guilty verdict against Campbell.
“It was lies against me,” Campbell had expressed.
Attorney Samantha Brown appeared on behalf of Campbell, while Prosecutor Marisa Edwards led the state’s case.
The matter dates back to April 30, 2020, where it was alleged that Campbell, a welder of Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, sexually penetrated a 12-year-old girl.
In her impact statement, the victim said since the incident, she has suffered immense emotional instability, that she is bombarded by negative thoughts and has developed trust issues. She also stated that she felt strong urges to inflict harm on herself, having done so on several occasion.
Campbell was initially given 19 years, from which two years were deducted for mitigating factors. One year was also added for the aggravating circumstance that he knew the victim.
He will be eligible for parole after serving at least 15 years.
