(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is currently seeking contractors to build new market facilities at New Amsterdam in Region Six and Zeelugt in Region Three.
According to the tender document, works at both markets will be done in four lots and bids for the projects are expected to open on May 28, 2026 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office.
Kaieteur News understands that the projects will form part of the $18 billion that was approved from the national budget for market projects across the country. In addition to constructing new markets, the money will cater to rehabilitate the structures at Port Kaituma, Bath, Railway Line, Unity, Rose Hall and Lethem, just to name a few.
In March, Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand met with her team to discuss the future of several markets across the country. The ministry had shared that the discussions explored what the Buxton, Plaisance, Zeelugt, and Tuschen markets could look like with redevelopment, as well as possible enhancements to the New Amsterdam and Skeldon markets. The ministry noted at the time that consideration was also given to the development of the Soesdyke Junction market area and the possibility of a rest stop along the highway.
Regarding the New Amsterdam Municipal Market, President Irfaan Ali announced in August 2025 that the government planned to replace the decades-old market with a new modern structure.
According to a Department Public Information article, President Ali disclosed that the existing market will be dismantled to make way for the new facility.
Having visited several market spaces between last year and this year, minister Manickchand disclosed during one of these visits that markets remain critical economic hubs within communities, providing livelihoods for hundreds of families while ensuring access to fresh produce and goods for residents. She added through her ministry they work on improving these infrastructures, enhancing sanitation facilities, addressing drainage concerns, and creating a more organised and resilient space for vendors and customers alike.
