Henry boys murder trial opens in Berbice High Court
(Kaieteur News) – A 12-member jury was empaneled on Wednesday at the Berbice High Court in New Amsterdam, to serve in the trial of two men accused of the 2020 murder of cousins Isaiah and Joel Henry.
Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall is presiding over the high-profile case.
The suspects, Vinood Gopaul 35, and Anil Sanchara 39, are being represented by attorney Dexter Todd.

The two have been charged with two counts of murder, one each for the two young men. The accused, during their virtual appearance, pleaded not guilty to the charge when they were read to them.
According to details of the case, between September 5 and 6, 2020, the two suspects murdered the two West Coast Berbice cousins.
The prosecution, led by Marisa Edwards, says some 44 witnesses are expected to appear for the major trial. Witnesses include police officers, relatives of the victims, and a pathologist.
The butchered bodies of Joel 19, and Isaiah 16, were discovered at a backdam in Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, a day after they went missing. Sancharra, called ‘Dan Pole’ and ‘Rasta’, of D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice; and Gopaul, called ‘Magga’, of Yakasari, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice, along with a 20-year-old Akash Singh were all arrested and remanded to prison.

Back in August, 2021, Magistrate Peter Hugh had discontinued the duo’s murder charge for Joel Henry on the basis of absent admissible evidence. Thereafter, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) renewed a joint murder charge of both cousins against the two, maintaining that there was enough evidence to proceed.
Massive outpouring of grief and a nationwide call for justice marked what is now etched in Guyana’s history as a national tragedy. In West Berbice, communities stood in solidarity with the bereaved families, responding to the chilling murders with violent protests that are still regarded as among the fiercest episodes of social unrest in the country.
The matter continues on Thursday, with both the prosecution and the defence expected to present their evidence.
