(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh when yuh hear people hollering “money tight,” don’t rush and feel sorry fuh dem. Sometimes is not the money at all—it’s the way dem spending like if payday is a festival that does come every Friday.
Dem boys seh the old people bin warn we long time. Dem seh, “If yuh income going up, that ain’t mean nothing if yuh spending it out faster.” But some ah we hear that and decide it sound too simple, so we ignore it and go invent we own kind of mathematics—one where two plus two does equal overdraft.
Dem boys seh watch how it does go. Man get lil raise, and before the ink dry on the payslip, he upgrade everything. Phone suddenly too slow. Car suddenly too small. House suddenly too plain. Even the grocery list start to behave like it win a scholarship—imported this, foreign that, and snacks that got more passport stamps than the owner.
Then month-end come, and is pure complaint. Cost of living too high. Economy too hard. Everything expensive. But dem boys seh nobody ain’t talking about the three streaming subscriptions, the takeout every other night, and the gym membership that only getting exercise when the bank account does jump.
Dem boys seh is what the old folks bin telling we: “Hang yuh hat where yuh can reach it.” But no, plenty people hanging hat where only ladder, loan, and long story could reach. Is not comfort dem want; is competition. Dem boys seh the real problem is lifestyle inflation. Quiet, well-dressed, and dangerous. It don’t rob yuh; it convince yuh. One day yuh living simple and easy, next day yuh “basic expenses” reading like a luxury brochure.
So when next yuh feel fuh say money ain’t enough, dem boys seh tek a lil pause and check yuhself. It might not be that yuh ain’t earning enough. It might be that yuh spending like yuh trying to impress people who ain’t even watching.
And that, dem boys seh, is the real tightness. Not the money, but the mindset.
Talk half. Leff half.

(Kaieteur News) – For years, we have called May 5, “Arrival Day.” It is a name that sounds inclusive but, in reality, obscures more than it reveals.
