(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh Georgetown gat a new official name: Garbage City. No need fuh ceremony or ribbon cutting. Just walk down any street after a lil rain and yuh go see the grand unveiling.
But leh we nah fool weself. Is not only Georgetown catching this title. The whole coastland quietly applying fuh membership. Dem boys seh every village got dem trusty side-line dam—the canal that supposed to carry water, not people whole life history. But instead of water flowing nice-nice, is old fridge, broken chair, rust-up drum and mattress floating like dem got permanent residency. If archaeologist ever dig up dem canal, dem gon think we worship appliances.
When some people seh “taking out the garbage,” what dem really mean is “find a dam, trench, roadside, or quiet corner and dash it.” No ceremony, no shame, no conscience. Plastic bottle? Throw it. Old stove? Throw it. Whole living room set? Why not—launch it.
Down by the seawall, is another story. Some folks treating the Atlantic Ocean like it is a giant garbage bin with waves to carry away evidence. Dem boys seh if the fish start protesting, nobody should be surprised. Even the tide looking confused, bringing back half the things people throw away like it saying, “nah, this is yours.”
And then we got the roadside exhibitions. Garbage pile up like modern art installation. Alleyways does turn into obstacle course. You walking and wondering if you in dump site.
Now everybody quick fuh blame drainage. “The trench ain’t running!” dem cry. But dem boys seh how water gon run when it got to fight through sofa, fridge and two bicycle frame? Drainage ain’t magician. It can’t disappear garbage like trick.
Truth is simple, even if it bitter: Guyana problem ain’t just drainage. It is the nasty habit of treating every open space like dumping ground. Until people stop this “throw it anywhere” lifestyle, no pump, no canal, no big project gon save we.
Dem boys noticing that some of the foreign immigrants joining the littering bandwagon. Dem drinking dem better outside dem supermarket and dumping de bottle in the gutter. Dem boys seh is time fuh clean up more than trench. We got to clean up weself.
Talk half. Leff half.
