(Kaieteur News) – I rarely talk about what comes out of the White House, the Dept. of Justice, and the US, in general. Indeed, President Trump has done that well with the American brand, savaged it so much, made it into a football for the world. A man of sorrows, he is. But what of his slavish insiders, some who follow him so fanatically, they essentially guarantee their own self-destruction? There is Ms. Pam Bondi, now former attorney general, one who everyone jumps on, have fun kicking around since she went down in flames. I use her example, to offer a kind word to a Guyanese brother, the Hon. Anil Nandlall, AG, SC, MP. Leaders use people for dirty jobs, until there’s no further use for them.
Ms. Bondi blindly followed the wishes of Mr. Trump, often anticipated what those were, and went to work. With axe and hatchet envenomed for bloody duty. Mr. Trump’s raging impatience meant she had to deliver her kiss of death to his enemies. Many such kisses. Where is Pam Bondi today, who buries her? On Meet the Press, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, stated the facts: “basically, she sold out her integrity, couldn’t look herself in the mirror.” Taut and torrid. Deal in what’s over-the-top, end up overboard. Try a little more of Kaine’s wisdom: an attorney general is supposed to have “an independent gravitas and integrity.” Enough of Senator Kaine. Time for a look at and a talk to Guyana’s Hon. Attorney General, Mr. Anil Nandlall.
Some battles were fought that compel me to take a hard look at gravitas and integrity, and to what degree, in my opinion, AG Nandlall has measured up. Frankly, I don’t think he tried hard enough; allowed primary obligation to slip his grasp. I imagined a man of his thinking power, a student of the world as much as he is, to be more studious, diligent. I have some ideas of how much AG Nandlall has injured himself. However, he is the best evaluator of his performance. How splendidly he has shaped up, or how poorly he has fared. One example, coined under his hand, has seared itself into national consciousness. Exxon v the Guyanese people. I took some liberties with that reference, but he more than anyone else, knows to what I point. When country should have come first, and by laps, AG Nandlall held party and government higher. The fate of a country was/is at stake, and Guyana’s attorney general decided, I believe, that the welfare of a political party, his, mattered the most. Gravitas and the highest standards of integrity are the areas where I struggle. The wellbeing of ordinary people, the rank-and-file mass, or an entity as low as a political party, was the challenge before AG Nandlall. He made his choice, and he left a set of fingerprints that exonerates him or erodes his standing. I do not ask one Guyanese to judge Mr. Nandlall. I neither liberate nor condemn the AG. He is best equipped to do so. His president cannot help, more likely to hurt. His general secretary is counsel best avoided.
Another example that rocks AG Nandlall is his seeming indifference regarding crimes committed by comrades, who weaponize social media to assassinate perceived enemies of the PPP Govt. Simply put, he has chosen the path of convenience, i.e., no response. Ignorance. He gushes about cybercrime law and crimes in general, but when comrades repeatedly violate the law, he sees no assault on his own integrity or gravitas. Thus, he is comforted by his own stillness; I think paralyzed by inaction.
Like Pam Bondi, now of ugly American infamy, there is that separation to which she didn’t adhere. There is a limit. Or else, law stained. People sullied. Presidents will command and demand (general secretaries even more). Ms. Bondi lost track of her feet, so she lost her head. Her name is sewage. There is a brutal lesson for Guyana’s attorney general. Recall cases here that were discarded, cases never made. In both instances he is smart enough to identify the road that was taken, whose interests served. Doing otherwise, may have ended the attorney general’s role. But of this I reassure him and others: there are worse fates. Oftentimes, the world is gained, but only when conscience, gravitas, and soul are all surrendered.
