(Kaieteur News) – Three firms have submitted bids to provide engineering services for the construction of the New Berbice River Bridge in Region Six.
According to information provided by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office, the Ministry of Public Works received the three bids from firms from Italy, Guyana and India.
The three firms that submitted their technical and financial proposals to NPTAB are Politencia Ingegneria ed Architettura S.C. (Italy) in association with sub-consultant, SRKN’gineering (Guyana); AI Engineers (Guyana) Inc. in association with sub-consultants – Environmental Management Consultants Inc (Guyana) and WSP Inc. (Caribbean); and RITES Limited (India) in joint venture with Sheladia Associates Inc. (USA), and sub-consultant CB & Associates Inc. (Guyana).
In 2024, the Public Works Ministry had sought expression of interests (EOIs) for the designing, building and financing of the new Berbice River Bridge.
In October 2024 nine contractors, that were all international companies, submitted expressions of interest. Of the nine, five contractors were invited to further bid for the project with their price.
According to tender openings in March 2025, the five bidders were China Railway Construction Caribbean Company Limited, China Railway Construction Bridge Engineering Bureau Group Co. Limited (Joint Venture) – US $255,872,559.08; AJM Enterprise, Shandong High-Speed Road & Bridge Company Limited (Joint Venture) – US$279,686,679.56; China Road & Bridge Corporation – US $205,888,712; China Railway First Group Company Limited, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co. Limited (Joint Venture) – US$266,432,183; and Vishwa Samooja Private Limited – US $465,510,780.
The Department of Public Information (DPI) reported in November 2025 that Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill disclosed that a contractor was identified and the government’s negotiation team is finalizing the contract.
In January 2024, President Irfaan Ali announced that his government intended to construct a fixed high-span crossing bridge across the Berbice River.
“We are already understanding the future needs of this region. That is why we are accelerating the plans for a fixed high-span crossing bridge across the Berbice River just like the one in the Demerara River,” President Ali said at a sod-turning event held for the US$161 million modern hospital in New Amsterdam. He had initially announced the construction of a new bridge in Berbice in October 2022.
The structure is expected to mirror the US$262 million new Demerara River Bridge, which was commissioned in October 2025.
