(Kaieteur News) – Police in Regional Division 4 ‘A’ have arrested four persons, including a teenager, as investigations continue into the theft of millions of dollars in cash from a businesswoman in Durban Backlands, Georgetown.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at approximately 17:30 hrs. and involved a 35-year-old Chinese national.
According to police, the woman had placed a black plastic bag containing cash on the front passenger seat of her motor bus, which was left unlocked while she supervised the offloading of a nearby container.
Investigators allege that during this time, a 16-year-old labourer entered the vehicle and removed the bag, which reportedly contained $7,000,000 (GYD).
CCTV footage obtained from the area is said to show the suspect entering the vehicle and later exiting with a bulky black plastic bag.
Following the discovery, police ranks conducted searches in the Durban Backlands community, leading to the recovery of $4,390,000 in Guyana currency.
Four persons were subsequently arrested and taken to the East La Penitence Police Station. They include the 16-year-old suspect, a 46-year-old female vendor, a 40-year-old female kitchen assistant, and a 38-year-old male labourer.
The recovered cash was counted in the presence of the suspects and has since been lodged as evidence.
Investigations are ongoing.
