(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh sovereignty ain’t a shirt yuh does wear only when yuh going out; is something yuh supposed to keep on all the time—yes, even when big people watching. Because if yuh only sovereign when it convenient, then yuh just dressing up independence like carnival costume.
Dem boys remember how Forbes Burnham used to run things. Back then, when apartheid South Africa was the flavour of wickedness, he draw a line. He seh plain and straight: Guyana nah doing business with South Africa. And it ain’t matter if private company want mek a lil extra dollar—dem had to fall in line. National principle over private profit. Some people bawl, some people grumble, but Guyana stand firm.
Fast forward now, and dem boys watching a next episode of global sitcom. The so-called Evil Empire tightening the screws on Cuba till light can’t even stay on. Whole place blackout like somebody forget to pay GPL. Fuel can’t reach, ships afraid, and the people catching it from all sides.
Now here come the million-dollar—or billion-barrel—question: what sovereignty really mean for Guyana? We got oil now, plenty oil. Enough to make friends, and apparently enough to lose backbone too, if dem boys ain’t careful.
Dem boys seh if the big powers could decide who Cuba can trade with, then Guyana could decide who get Guyana oil. Simple maths. If Cuba can’t get fuel because of pressure, then why Guyana fuel must comfortably find its way to the same hands doing the squeezing?
Tell the oil companies plain: this ain’t just business, this is principle. Guyana oil ain’t going to the Evil One while Cuba sitting in darkness. That is what standing beside Cuba really mean—not speech, not handshake, but action that pinch.
Because sovereignty ain’t for show. And if yuh can’t use it when it matter, then all yuh got is flag and anthem… and plenty oil going the wrong place.
Talk half. Leff half.
