(Kaieteur News) – The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) has raised alarm over a series of deliberate vandalism incidents at the National Park, warning that those responsible are being actively pursued.
Using 24-hour CCTV surveillance and routine patrols, the Commission has documented multiple acts of destruction, including the defacing of park signage, the uprooting of plants near the Children’s Monument, and damage to public infrastructure.
The PAC stressed that the National Park is a vital space for recreation, fitness, and family life, it stated in a press release. These acts, it said, not only strain limited resources for maintenance and upgrades but also show disregard for the thousands of Guyanese who depend on the park daily. “Members of the public are reminded that the National Park is a sanctuary for fitness, family, and nature, and these acts of destruction not only deplete resources meant for maintenance and improvement but also disrespect the thousands of Guyanese who utilise the space daily,” the release stated.
Authorities have already obtained footage of the incidents and are working closely with the Guyana Police Force to identify and take action against those responsible.
The Commission is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or damage to on-site security personnel or via the following numbers: 604-1088, 694-6653, 699-3990, and 666-5677.
