(Kaieteur News) – Canadian-based explorer Omai Gold Mines Corp. has begun hosting public consultations in several communities on its Region Seven gold project.
Omai is the 100% owner of the Omai Gold Project, located in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) in “mining-friendly” Guyana. The project hosts two orogenic gold deposits: Wenot and the adjacent Gilt Creek. In August 2025, the company announced an updated Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE), reflecting a 96% increase at the Wenot Gold Deposit to 970,000 ounces of gold (Indicated) and 3,717,000 ounces (Inferred). Combined, Wenot and Gilt Creek now total 2,121,000 ounces of gold (Indicated) and 4,382,000 ounces (Inferred).
Last year, Omai’s subsidiary, Avalon Gold Exploration Inc. applied to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeking environmental authorisation for the project as part of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
In a statement on Tuesday, it was noted that public consultation meetings have been held in several locations, including Linden, Mile 58, Georgetown and Mahdia, providing an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to learn more about the project and share their perspectives.
The consultations forms part of the EIA process and includes detailed environmental studies as well as ongoing engagement with communities and stakeholders near the project area. During these consultations, discussions highlighted the potential economic benefits of the project, including employment opportunities and new prospects for local businesses and service providers.
The company outlined that large-scale mining developments often create significant demand for goods, services and skilled labour, which can generate broader economic activity in surrounding communities.
During one of the consultations, Mayor of Linden, Dominique Blair said, “We are excited to see that Omai can once again be a large-scale gold mine that will provide many good jobs for the people of Linden and surrounding areas.”
“We know from the past that large mines operate with quality equipment, high safety standard and provide many spin-off jobs for transportation, food services, suppliers and many others. It is good news to hear that they have found much more gold this time and that, once built, this mine is likely to operate at least 20 years but now possibly 30 years or more. This will be a great thing for our communities,” he said.
While the project is in the exploration and evaluation phase, Omai is advancing technical studies and regulatory processes required to move toward development.
Omai has completed work on a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), with results expected in the second quarter of 2026. This study will provide updated technical and economic insights, including proposed milling capacity, mining approaches, and metallurgical processing strategies. Notably, work has already begun toward the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS).
Subject to the successful completion of environmental reviews, technical studies and permitting requirements, construction of the new mining operation at Omai could begin by 2027.
Historically, the Omai Gold Mine produced over 3.7 million ounces of gold from 1993 to 2005, ceasing operations when gold prices fell below US$400 per ounce. The project now benefits from existing infrastructure, including an on-site airstrip and road connections to Guyana’s two largest cities, Georgetown and Linden.
In the past five years, Omai has completed more than 80,000 metres of drilling, supported by airborne and ground geophysical surveys and technical studies. The company is continuing detailed drilling with 50,000 metres planned for 2026 along with engineering work to further define the mineral resources and advance the project toward the next stages of development.
