(Kaieteur News) – De time changing like de wind wah blowin’ through de coconut trees. Back in de day, yuh coulda invite a few family and friends over fuh a lil’ shindig at yuh humble abode, and a pot of cook-up rice and a jug of mauby woulda be plenty to keep de vibes flowin’. But look how de world tun upside down now eh!
De modern get-together, me friends, it’s like a big buffet at de Marriott now. Yuh ain’t just welcomin’ dem friends no more; yuh welcomin’ de whole neighborhood and dem cousin from out of town, plus dem uncles, aunties, and even dem friends’ frenemies. Wha’ happen to small and intimate? Dem invitees does show up with more plus ones than a math exam.
And when dem done stuffin’ dem belly, dey ain’t satisfied. Dem want more – not just to fill deir bellies, but to fill up takeaway boxes like dey preparin’ fuh a famine! One box? Nah, dat’s too lil’, me pardner. Two? Still not enough, me sister. Three? Well, now yuh talkin’! Three boxes per person fuh take home!
Dis ain’t nothin’ short of pure old-fashioned greediness., and dem folks collectin’ ’em like dey collectin’ dey pension. Me granny always seh, “Share wha’ yuh have, me child, and blessings will flow like de Essequibo River.” But some a we s done take dat to a whole new level – dey share de blessings, den dey collect de blessings back in dem takeaway boxes fuh later! Covetousness mekkin’ de rounds like a persistent mosquito, and it look like some a we can’t swat it away.
So next time yuh gettin’ ready fuh host a lil’ get-together, remember dis: de company of true friends worth more than a hundred takeaway boxes.
