(Kaieteur News) – A 22-year-old Venezuelan labourer was on Saturday evening shot and robbed by two identifiable men on a motorcycle at Flamboyant Street, Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
The victim has been identified as Damian Garcia, who resides at Eccles. He was robbed of one cellphone, brand, colour and value unknown, along with $30,000 in cash.
According to police, around 19:40 hrs., moments after Garcia left a Chinese supermarket located on Flamboyant Street and was walking heading home, he was confronted by the two suspects on a motorcycle. Both men were reportedly clad in dark clothing.
Police said the pillion rider dismounted and attempted to relieve Garcia of his valuables, leading to a scuffle. During the confrontation, the suspect reportedly pulled out a firearm from the right side of his pants waist and discharged several rounds, striking Garcia to his left leg.
The suspect then took the victim’s belongings, remounted the motorcycle and escaped with his accomplice.
Public-spirited citizens alerted the police and Emergency Medical Technicians from the Diamond Fire Station transported the injured man to the Diamond Regional Hospital.
The scene was processed and photographed by investigators and a 9mm spent shell and a pair of black-and-white sneakers was recovered. Blood samples were also collected.
The area was canvassed for CCTV cameras, and efforts are ongoing to review the footage.
Garcia reportedly sustained three gunshot wounds to his left foot: one to the kneecap, which was shattered, and two to the shin. X-rays revealed what appears to be a bullet or bullet fragments lodged in the shin bone. He is expected to be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital to undergo surgery.
