(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh dem hate fuh sound like a ol’ vinyl record weh get scratch and keep jumping back to de same line. But wha fuh do? When yuh driving pon de East Coast Public Road, is like yuh enter a horror movie and de villain is… yuh fellow driver.
Is no longer just traffic. Is traffic with ambition.
Every morning and afternoon, dem boys watching drivers turn two lanes into three, and sometimes four if de shoulder look strong enough fuh tek a lil tyre pressure. Undertaking is now a national sport. People nah waiting fuh overtake on de right; dem diving on de left, squeezing between minibus and drain like dem in a Fast & Furious sequel.
Dem boys seh is not congestion alone causing de nightmare. Is indiscipline. Plain and simple. Everybody in a hurry, but nobody reaching faster. Instead, everybody reaching stressed.
Now remember how de resident had to personally step in pon de East Bank situation? Yes, de same traffic saga did deh pon de East Bank Demerara Public Road. People did holler. Things did chaotic. And then action come. Today, believe it or not, yuh getting to Cheddi Jagan International Airport faster dese days — even with chokepoints — than before de big road repairs start. Progress ain’t perfect, but at least is progress.
So dem boys asking: who stepping in fuh East Coast Public Road? Goat bite am?
De police trying. Dem boys nah knocking dem. But leh we be honest — dem don’t have de numbers fuh park an officer at every lamp post from LBI to Annandale where the greatest bottleneck is. Drivers creating dem own lanes, driving through dem villages only to emerge through a side street further up and merging dangerously with the traffic on the Public Road. And when yuh try fuh block dem is one big cuss yuh getting.
What de East Coast Public Road need between LBI and Annandale is camera every 100 meters. Big, bright, blinking reminders that Big Brother watching yuh bad driving. And more importantly, undertaking and creating third lanes got fuh become proper ticketable offences weh hurt pocket bad-bad. Because some drivers only learning when dem wallet start crying.
And de police don’t have the resources to charge everyone who undertaking along this stretch. Mek undertaking a ticketable offence, rather than only one which requires a dangerous driving charge, and drivers will learn when dem wallets feel the pinch.
Talk half. Leff half.
