(Kaieteur News) – The new secondary schools for Jawalla and Phillipai in Region Seven that have been under construction since 2024, are expected to be completed in July, Minister of Education, Sonia Parag has disclosed.
The minister gave the assurance during the recently concluded consideration of budget estimates.
Former Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand in June 2024 turned the sod for the $231 million Jawalla Secondary School, a project which was awarded to Sheriff Construction. The ministry, at the time, stated that the school will be completed in eight months.
The school is set to cater for up to 250 students and when completed, will be equipped with facilities including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Information Technology laboratories, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) laboratories, a Home Economics room, library space, teachers’ quarters, spacious classrooms and a small dormitory just to name a few.
In September 2024, Minister Manickchand also turned the sod for the $275.2 million Phillipai Secondary School. That contract was awarded to Prored Resources, and was scheduled for completion eight months thereafter.
The Phillipai Secondary School is expected to house 240 students and will feature three key blocks housing Home Economics and Visual Arts (VA) classrooms, designed to provide students with practical and creative learning experiences. It will have also a well-equipped library, offering a vital resource for research and study, eight classrooms with essential sanitary facilities to ensure a comfortable and hygienic environment for students, among an administrative space and sick bay.
During the consideration of budget estimates, Minister Parag was asked for updates on several school projects by members of the opposition.
She was asked about the state-of-the-art Hosororo Secondary School in Region One, and Karasabai Secondary School in Region Nine which were signed back in 2023. She stated that the projects are both 70% completed and Hosororo will be completed in March and Karasabai is set for June deadline.
This publication reported that $1.7 billion Karasabai Secondary is being built by Avinash Contracting and Scrap Metal Inc. The modern school complex will be fitted with ten buildings, which would include the main teaching block and allied lecturing facilities, modern science laboratory for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, TVET Centres, combined Home Economics and cafeteria area, teachers’ quarters and an outdoor sitting forecourt, the ministry reported in 2023.
Meanwhile, the $2.6 billion Hosororo Secondary School will accommodate over 500 students upon completion and will have a science centre which will feature physics, chemistry and biology laboratories. Additionally, the school will have a TVET centre which will have both industrial and home economics laboratories. A student dormitory and visiting area will also be constructed to accommodate 200 students while the teachers’ duplex living quarters will accommodate 20 teachers.
Additionally, the new $2.6 billion Christiansburg-Wismar Secondary School in Region 10, which Minister Parag disclosed is a World Bank project, will be completed by February 2027.
In 2024, the sod was turned for the $1.3 billion Nismes Secondary School in Region Three, which the minister said is scheduled for completion next month. The minister disclosed that some students are already being accommodated in two of the school’s teaching blocks.
Further, Minister Parag disclosed that Nappi’s new secondary school in Region Nine has been completed barring works being done on the TVET building.
