(Kaieteur News) – Police in Berbice are investigating the death of a 52-year-old patient of the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital, who they said died under troubling circumstances after he was discovered bleeding inside the hospital’s acute center Wednesday evening.
Dead is Ravindra Yudeshwar Bishram of Cumberland, East Canje Berbice. Police said that at approximately 19:30 hrs. on February 19, a staff member on duty reportedly heard gasping sounds coming from within the ward, which houses patients requiring close supervision. Upon checking, Bishram was found lying in a pool of blood.
He was immediately escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Department. He succumbed to his injuries at about 06:53 hrs. on Thursday while receiving medical attention.
Police confirmed that another patient at the facility, 38-year-old Anthony Tucker of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, was involved in the incident. Tucker has since been placed in an isolation room as investigations continue.
Bishram’s body has been transported to Persaud’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Investigators are working to establish what transpired inside the acute centre prior to Bishram being found injured. Authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of the injuries.
