Kaieteur Sports – The inaugural Petra-Modec Tertiary Football Tournament continues today with three thrilling encounters across venues in West Coast and East Coast of Demerara. Following a series of statement victories during the opening round, the race for quarterfinals qualification remains open as action intensifies over the next week of competition.
Upper Corentyne Training Centre, Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre, UG Turkeyen Campus, and Government Technical Institute have already delivered early fireworks, announcing their presence with a few dominant victories. The action is brewing, Linden Technical Institute and Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre are set to play in important fixtures today, both teams playing their second match of the tournament.
Spearheaded by the dynamic Petra Organisation and powered by title sponsor Modec, the tournament represents a vital new tier in Guyana’s football pathway. With support from corporate heavyweights such as Macorp, MVP Sports and Demerara Mutual Group, the competition provides a crucial platform for players transitioning from secondary to tertiary level football.
A $300,000 first-place prize awaits the inaugural winners. Financial incentive will also be awarded to second, third and fourth place finishers. At the moment the competition hang in balance. However, the stakes remain high.
With the tournament now entering a relentless week of action, today’s fixtures promise nothing short of drama.
At 11:00 hours, Essequibo Technical Institute clash with Leonora Technical and Vocational Training Centre at the Leonora Ground in what is billed as an explosive opening encounter for both sides.
Leonora will be aming for an early victory in their home fixture. However, Essquibo’s intent could turn heads with the staggering number of talent present in these areas.
After that clash, action shifts to Buxton Ground at 13:30 hours, when Guyana School of Agriculture take on Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre. MTVTC enters with a massive psychological edge after dismantling their opponents 10–3 in their previous encounter. The work is not quite complete, MTVTC currently in a better position to fancy their chances of sealing progression. GSA, meanwhile, must tighten defensively and hopefully serve up a theaterical finish, if they are to overturn the deficit and keep knockout hopes alive.
Followong that, at the same venue, Cyril Potter College of Education will host the Linden Technical Institute in another decisive fixture. CPCE also with a tough challenge on their hand, needing to win LTI by at least two goals to advance.
With quarterfinal spots within touching distance, Mahaicony TVTC and Linden Technical Institute could potentially become the first two institutions to book their places into the next round.
Today decides.
The Modec Tertiary Football Tournament has already delivered pure fireworks as Petra Organisation in collaboration with Modec introduce a next layer of developmental football.
