(Kaieteur News) – The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) on Thursday announced that it has been formally notified by law enforcement authorities in Colombia and Belgium of the discovery of cocaine concealed in two separate containers that originated from Guyana.
According to CANU, the interceptions occurred in February 2026 in Europe and South America. The containers were declared as carrying rice and chemicals respectively.
The agency said, “Preliminary information indicates that the containers were transhipped en route to their final destinations.” “As such, it is highly likely that the consignments were contaminated during the transhipment process. This method of exploiting transhipment points to introduce illicit narcotics is a known tactic used by transnational drug trafficking networks seeking to circumvent security measures at ports of origin.”
CANU further stated that it is working closely with its international counterparts as investigations continue. Due to the sensitive nature of the matter, further details cannot be disclosed at this time.
CANU also said it is collaborating with local law enforcement and regulatory agencies, including the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF), as part of ongoing investigations.
