(Kaieteur News) – Police in Regional Division #2 have launched an investigation into a fatal river mishap at Kabakaburi, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo, which claimed the life of a 71-year-old pensioner on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 15:30hrs and resulted in the death of Felix Smith, a resident of St. Monica Village, Upper Pomeroon River.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a wooden boat operated by a 36-year-old woman of Karawab Village was travelling along the river with two passengers when it reportedly collided with another wooden vessel captained by Smith. A female passenger was also aboard Smith’s boat at the time of the collision.
Following the impact, Smith was found unconscious in his vessel. He was rushed to the Karawab Health Centre and later transferred to the Charity Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending medical practitioner. His body was subsequently taken to the hospital’s mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. The operator of the other boat is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
