(Kaieteur News) – The National Assembly on Monday approved a total of $970,192,000 for the operations of state media agencies, the National Communications Network (NCN), and the Department of Public Information (DPI).
The $970 million was approved by the committee of supply during the consideration of budget estimates for the office of the prime minister.
Under the programme, Government Information and Communication Services, Prime Minister Brigadier(ret’d) Mark Phillips was asked by APNU’s Member of Parliament, Sherod Duncan if the $970 million allocation under subsidies and contributions to local organisations, caters for $100 million owed to Stabroek News by the government.
In his response, the prime minister explained that “We have $970,192,000 there, and it caters for the increased allocation provided subvention for the National Communications Network in the amount of $490,192,000, Department of Public Information $480 million, and for salaries and daily operations.”
In a follow up question, Duncan then asked the PM, if there is any intention by the government to pay Stabroek News, what is owed in this fiscal year.
“If you look at what obtained in 2025 there were several instances in the media where Stabroek News and other news agencies claim that they had money outstanding and they were paid. I have no reason to believe that in 2026 this government will not find a way of paying them what is owed. It don’t necessarily have to be here, but we could find a way of paying them,” the prime minister explained.
According to the figures stated in the budget estimates, under subsidies and contributions to local organisations for 2025, some $915 million was provided for in the national budget.
