(Kaieteur News) – More than 20 homes belonging to residents of Circuitville, located along the Linden–Soesdyke Highway, were bulldozed on Sunday in an area reportedly earmarked for sand-mining operations.
The affected residents, many of whom have been living in the area for several years, said they were occupying a land within a sand pit and were previously assured by government representatives that the community would be regularised. According to residents, they were repeatedly promised house lots and were required to complete multiple registration forms as part of the regularisation process.
Following the demolition, residents are now appealing to the Government to engage them urgently and provide a solution, including possible relocation, as many families have been left without shelter. During a live broadcast on the Team Mohameds Facebook page on Sunday afternoon, Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed visited the community and met with residents who expressed distress over the destruction of their homes. Several residents said they are now uncertain where they and their children will sleep.
Residents reported that they raised concerns about the removal of their homes with the community’s Toshao, but were told that she was not responsible for the decision. They further stated that they do not know the owner of the sand pit or who authorised the demolition. “It’s like you’re living in Circuitville but divided into four different countries, because there may be a meeting going on in the back and we wouldn’t know anything about it, so we don’t know what is going on here” one resident said.

While more than 50 families reportedly reside in the area, residents said approximately 20 homes have so far been destroyed, allegedly by the owner of the sand pit who is currently conducting sand-mining operations. However, residents said they remain unaware of who granted approval for the homes to be bulldozed.
Residents also told Mohamed that forms were distributed on several occasions for them to apply for house lots, and that they were asked to make financial contributions for surveys intended to regularise the area. According to residents, no surveys were ever conducted. “I have been living here about 10 years now, and I done fill up forms five times now and nothing till now. You pay a $5,000 and they give you a slip and that’s for the survey, more than one time we paid,” another resident stated.
Additionally, residents claimed that Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McCoy, had visited the community on several occasions and had assured them that the area would be regularised. However, when contacted, Minister McCoy reportedly said he was unaware of the demolition activities taking place in the area.
