(Kaieteur News) – Opposition Chief Whip Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, on Friday submitted a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir reporting allegations of sexual harassment and threats, to We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Members of Parliament (MP’s) Toshana Famey-Corlette and Deon LaCruz by Minister of Government Kwame McCoy.
In the letter, Sarabo-Halley reported a serious incident of misconduct allegedly involving a government minister which occurred within the “precincts of the National Assembly on Tuesday February 3rd, 2026, and which raises grave concerns regarding parliamentary decorum, member safety, and dignity.”
The report states that during the course of proceedings, the minister directed a “sexually inappropriate and threatening statement at WIN Member of Parliament, Ms. Toshana Famey-Corlette, stating words to the effect that he would “do to her what he does to little boys.”
The chief whip said that the statement constitutes sexual harassment, one of an egregious nature and wholly incompatible with the standards expected of a member of this honourable house.
In addition, Minister McKoy also allegedly threatened MP Deon LaCruz, pointing in his face, stating “you don’t know me, I will deal with you”. The letter described this kind of conduct as menacing, intimidating and unbecoming of a parliamentarian, in particular one who is a member of the executive.
“Honourable Speaker, these alleged actions undermine: the dignity of members, the safety of the parliamentary environment, and the authority and integrity of the national assembly itself. I respectfully request that this matter be: 1. Formally noted on the record; 2. Investigated or referred in accordance with the standing orders and any applicable codes of conduct; 3. Addressed in a manner that reaffirms this assembly’s commitment to respect, safety, and proper conduct among all members,” the letter went on to say.
Sarabo-Halley reasoned that the national assembly must remain a place where members, especially women, can discharge their duties free from harassment, threats, or intimidation, therefore she is urging that the report be given urgent attention followed by the appropriate actions.
During her budget debate presentation, MP Famey-Corlette made reference to allegations against members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on sexual misconduct saying that she “knew how the (victims) felt” as she herself suffered sexual harassment from a colleague, subsequently calling the minister’s name. The speaker then challenged the MP to produce her evidence and she told him “I have witnesses,”, to which the speaker told her “well produce them.”
