(Kaieteur News) – Police in Regional Division #7 are probing a fatal shooting that unfolded during a high-risk joint service operation at Quartzstone Backdam, Region Seven, on Thursday, leaving one suspected accomplice dead.
The dead man has been identified as Shemar Latif, of Onderneeming Sandpit, Essequibo Coast. His age was not immediately available.
According to police, the operation was launched to capture a wanted fugitive and his alleged accomplices linked to serious crimes within the division. During the exercise, ranks came upon Latif, who was suspected to be among those aiding the fugitive.
Police said attempts were made to engage him, but the situation quickly escalated when Latif, reportedly armed with a handgun, opened fire on the ranks while trying to escape. Officers took evasive action and returned fire, during which Latif was shot. A 9mm pistol, six live rounds of ammunition and several spent shells were recovered at the scene. Latif was rushed to the Bartica Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination as investigations continue into the incident and the wider operation.
