(Kaieteur News) – New Amsterdam Mayor, Wainwright McIntosh said the Mayor and Town Council (M&TC) is working with the Ministry of Local Government to address the landfill issue in the township.
This follows the recent closure of the Esplanade Landfill Site which facilitated large-scale garbage disposal for the town, and the abrupt discontinuation of the Belle Vue Landfill Site, on the East Bank Berbice, which was in use for a brief period before residents expressed concerns about the location.
McIntosh, in an address to citizens recently, said arrangements are now being made for an alternative site, a “suitable location”, which was not yet disclosed. Moreover, the council is hastening its collaboration with the local government ministry to create a space for this critical service.
In the meantime, the town will transport refuse to another municipal district. This interim alternative comes with its challenges to the M&TC.
“It was recommended for us to use the landfill site at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, of which we’ve embarked on utilising that landfill site. Of course, going to Rose Hall is time-consuming, more so it’s a financial cost attached to using that landfill site at Rose Hall,” the NA mayor related.
Another hassle, McIntosh noted, is the time it will take for the compactor truck to reach that alternative site, considering the traffic buildup on the main access roads heading into Rose Hall.
With the Landfill Site at Esplanade Park being shut down, the council opted for the Belle Vue site, but residents pushed back against that move.
At what he deemed a major crossroad, the mayor disclosed that the municipality took the matter to the ministry.
“They are aware of this new development- the PS (permanent secretary) and the relevant persons in charge- we would have sent a correspondence to the Minister of Local Government as well.”
As those engagements are ongoing, the municipal leader implored that residents to be disciplined in the way they dispose their garbage.
“… 2025, we were able to overcome many challenges, and we were pretty much effective and efficient with regard to the way we handle solid waste within this municipal district, we would have seen a significant increase with regard to the frequency of pickups,” he reminded.
He also pledged the council’s commitment to providing timely resolutions, while also encouraging that errant individuals be reported.
“I can assure you the Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam, we will continue to go above and beyond to ensure that both residential and commercial bins are serviced in a timely manner…we are asking for you to be on the lookout for those persons who would want to dispose of their garbage in an undesirable manner.”
On Sunday, Member of Parliament Zamal Hussain, Regional Chairman Junior Bassant, and officials from the Ministry of Local Government visited the Belle Vue site and engaged residents.
