Kaieteur Sports – Berbice are the new Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Under-13 Inter-County champions, dethroning the 2025 holders Demerara following a dramatic final day of action that saw the title decided by the narrowest of margins.

Despite a final-day defeat, Berbice lifted the trophy at the Lusignan Basketball International (LBI) facility on Tuesday after a three-way tie atop the standings forced officials to look at the math.

Berbice, Essequibo, and Demerara all finished the tournament with identical records of two wins and one defeat (four points each).

However, Berbice emerged victorious with a superior net run rate (NRR) of 1.070. Essequibo narrowly missed out to finish second on 0.986, while the former champions Demerara had to settle for third place with an NRR of 0.104.

Dramatic Low-Scoring Thriller at LBI

The final encounter between Essequibo and Berbice proved to be a tense, low-scoring thriller. Batting first, Essequibo struggled heavily and were bowled out for just 74 runs in 15.5 overs. Kaysean Doodnauth top-scored with 27, while a hefty contribution of 24 extras helped prop up the innings.

What seemed like a routine chase for Berbice quickly turned into a nightmare batting collapse. The Berbicians were skittled out for 70 runs in 22.2 overs, falling just four runs short of victory. Alden Hope (18) and Thavin Roopnarine (11 not out) were the only batsmen to reach double figures, while 28 extras top-scored for the innings.

Essequibo’s Saif Hussain was the architect of the collapse, producing an extraordinary spell of bowling to claim five wickets for just 10 runs across seven overs. Nathan McPherson and Ugesh Ramnarine supported well with two wickets each.

Demerara Edges Select XI in Final Match

Over at the Transport and Harbours Sports Club in Georgetown, Demerara ensured they ended their campaign on a winning note, edging the GCB Select XI by two wickets in a closely contested fixture.

The GCB Select XI batted first, posting 150 for eight from their allotted 40 overs. Austin Peters anchored the innings with 39 runs, ably supported by captain Elijah Mohamed, who made 34. Kevroy Garraway added seven. For Demerara’s bowling attack, Rakeeb Latif and Huzaifah Shadir picked up two wickets apiece, while Aaron Perkins and captain Caleb Bastian took one each.

In reply, Demerara chased down the target, reaching 151 for eight in 34.1 overs. Xavier Dodson continued his stellar form, smashing a quick-fire 42 from 41 balls. Aiyan Persaud contributed 26, and Rakeeb Latif mirrored his bowling success by steering the team home with an unbeaten 30.

The Select XI bowling unit fought hard, led by Spencer Singh, Kishan Bhikhan, and Isaac Hussain, who took two wickets each, alongside one from Kayden Springer. The loss meant the Select XI finished the competition without a single victory.
