(Kaieteur News) – Inspections by a team from the Ministry of Natural Resources have led to the shutdown of an illegal mining operation in the Essequibo River.
According to the ministry, its corps of wardens recently inspected nine mining operations along the river and found one operation to be in breach of regulations. The operation, overseen by Jonathan Rodrigues, was discovered to be operating without permission and a designated buffer zone.
The general manager was found in possession of one ounce 13 dwt of gold and was arrested. He was later placed before the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty and was fined. The seized gold was lodged at the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) headquarters.
Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, stated, “We will not tolerate illegal activities that undermine our laws and jeopardise our natural resources. We will remain steadfast in honouring our commitment to rigorous enforcement of the law to safeguard the integrity of our mining sector.”
He added, “The ministry will therefore continue to intensify its efforts against illegal mining, in line with the call by His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali to address non-compliant operations.”
The ministry said the enforcement action forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure strict compliance with the Guyana Mining Act and its Regulations. It noted that as inspections continue, the public can expect all breaches to be made public.
Operators were again reminded to conduct their business within the confines of the law, as all offenders will be dealt with without fear or favour.
