(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony on Saturday said part of revolutionising the local healthcare system is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret X-ray images.
Speaking at the launch of the Electronic Health Record System, he said that the AI system is currently being piloted at the new Enmore Regional Hospital on the East Coast of Demerara.
The minister stated that the government has been replacing the analog X-ray units at a number of hospitals with new state-of-the-art digital machines.
With the new machines, he noted that they are taking a step further by having artificial intelligence read the images.
“And if you think that’s too sci-fi, or you know, sound like fiction, we have such a system right now that we are operating at the Enmore Regional hospital, where, once a digital X-ray is done, it goes into the system and guess what, it takes 17 seconds for it to be read, and the accuracy of what is there is close to 99 per cent and that is something that we want to scale up,” Minister Anthony explained.
While the initiative is at the pilot stage, he added that will be used for X-rays and CT scans, MRIs and other imagings.
“So, this is the direction in which we are going, this is one that is absolutely necessary if we are going to deliver world class health care to our people,” he said.
He noted that while the government is working on introducing new technology to the health system, he asked that people embrace these new and innovative changes.
“So, we want to ensure that you help us through and you have to embrace the technology. We are going to try to facilitate as much as we can, to smooth out any problems that you might have, but we want you to have the patience to keep trying and making sure that you adapt to the technology. Because if you as the patients don’t adapt to the technology, if you don’t use it, then we are defeating all of what we have been trying to do,” he mentioned.
The minister noted also that in roll out of the new technologies, as for the staff, “they have been working very hard to ensure that they understand how to work with the system, and they’re getting better at it every day.”
