(Kaieteur News) – The duo that was caught with almost 50 pounds of cocaine on January 14 were on Friday charged with the crime.
Dyal Simon and Adonayi Hoyte appeared before Magistrate Weever at the Wales Magistrates’ Court to answer “charges related to the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, to wit, 22.394 kilograms of cocaine.
Hoyte pleaded not guilty and was granted $200,000 bail while Simon pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined G$33,951,000, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) said on Friday.
On January 15, Kaieteur News reported that CANU seized the cocaine during an operation at La Grange, West Bank Demerara.
The unit said CANU officers, acting on information, conducted an operation in the vicinity of the La Grange Public Road where they intercepted a motor vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed 20 brick-like parcels containing a quantity of cocaine.
The suspects were arrested and taken to the CANU headquarters along with the narcotics, which was weighed.
