(Kaieteur News) – The countdown to Guyana’s most vibrant cultural celebration has officially begun. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will host the official Mashramani 2026 Launch on today, January 16th at 6PM at the Railway Courtyard, marking the start of the nation’s beloved Republic festivities.
Mashramani, derived from the Amerindian word meaning “celebration after hard work”, holds profound significance in Guyana’s cultural calendar. Celebrated annually on February 23rd, the festival commemorates the nation’s transition to a Republic in 1970, transforming into a spectacular showcase of Guyanese creativity, unity, and national pride through music, dance, costume and more.
This year’s launch promises an electrifying evening of entertainment, featuring performances from Guyana’s reigning monarchs across soca, calypso, and chutney music. The program will also include captivating dance performances and a stunning costume display, offering patrons a preview of the spectacular artistry and innovation that will define Mashramani 2026.
Under the theme “Expressing our Culture through Innovation and Creativity”, the Ministry has unveiled an extensive calendar of events that will bring Mashramani celebrations to every corner of Guyana. The festivities kick off on Friday, January 23rd with Banks Mash in de Avenue on Main Street, Georgetown, followed by a Pop-Up Concert in New Amsterdam the next day.
The calendar features a diverse lineup designed to engage all Guyanese. Highlights include the beloved Guinness Pan in de Avenue returning to Main Street on January 30th, regional jamborees in Linden (January 31st) and the Tapachinga Ground in Region 9 (February 7th), and Pop-Up Concerts bringing entertainment to Essequibo’s Anna Regina Car Park and Moruca in Region 1.
Competition season heats up in mid-February with the highly anticipated monarch competitions. The Calypso Monarch will battle it out in Mabaruma on February 14th, while the Dancehall Monarch competition takes over the 1823 Monument Site at Kitty Seawall on February 15th. The Soca Monarch competition comes to Georgetown Bus Park in Linden on February 20th, with the Chutney Monarch crowning their winner at Albion Stadium on February 21st.
Music lovers can look forward to Panorama at Kingston Beach on February 19th, while families will enjoy the Ministry of Education’s Children’s Mashramani Finals on February 12th-13th, followed by the vibrant Children’s Costume Parade on February 14th.
The celebrations reach their crescendo during the final weekend, with Masharama at the National Park and Splashramani at Providence National Stadium on February 21st and 22nd respectively. The traditional Republic Flag Raising at the Public Buildings on Sunday, February 22nd sets the stage for the grand finale – the spectacular Costume and Float Parade through Georgetown on Monday, February 23rd, Republic Day. With events spanning from Georgetown to the hinterland regions, Mashramani 2026 promises to be a truly national celebration, bringing together communities across Guyana in a month-long display of cultural pride, artistic excellence, and the infectious Guyanese spirit that makes this celebration unique.
