Kaieteur Sports – Guyana botched a possible second straight win last night when they suffered a 7-run loss at the hands of the Leeward Islands.
Again, spin was the primary weapon of choice used by the defending champions Guyana, who restricted their opponents to 106-9 from 20 overs.
Spin twins Ashmini Munisar (4-15) and Plaffianna Millington (3-11), were exceptional during their spells, essentially keeping the Leewards to a relatively low score.
Only Leewards players to reach double figures was the burly wicket-keeper Reneice Boyce, who carried the innings with an attacking knock of 51 which featured 7 fours.
While skipper Amanda Edwards smashed two sixes and two fours to finish on 31 from 29 balls, leaving their bowlers tons of work to do.
Guyana replied strongly, but it proved futile in the end as they were knocked over for 99 runs.
Sheneta Grimmond (23), Mandy Mangru (24) and skipper Shemaine Campbelle (11) were the top scorers, as Edwards (3-18), Davronique Maynard (2-13) and Qiana Joseph (2-10).
Round 3 tomorrow Saturday, January 17, features Trinidad and Tobago facing Leewards in the first of three games.
Barbados will tackle Windwards in the afternoon match, while Guyana will play their second night game against Jamaica from 19:00h. (Clifton Ross)
