(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has called on miners to operate in the best interest of Guyana, urging full compliance with mining regulations and proper declaration of production.
During a recent event, Managing Director of the GGDMA, Avalon Jagnandan, said the association remains committed to the sustainability and growth of the local mining sector and is actively pushing for increased production and declarations. He reminded miners that strict adherence to mining regulations must become the norm and reiterated the association’s call for miners to sell their gold only to legitimate buyers and the Guyana Gold Board.
The call was echoed by Vice-President of the GGDMA, Dabria Marcus, who said the initiative is part of an ongoing effort to help miners re-enter and remain in the industry. He noted that the association is responding to President Irfaan Ali’s call to expand the sector and urged miners to operate in the best interest of the country by becoming fully compliant and declaring all production. Marcus also encouraged miners to join the association, noting that it represents all miners.
GGDMA began the year with a donation to small miners as part of its assistance programme aimed at helping them re-enter the industry and expand operations. Essential mining equipment was handed over to two small-scale miners from the Jackman family, who the association said had encountered difficult circumstances.
According to the GGDMA, the decision to assist the Jackman family was taken by the committee of management, including the president and executive members, to help them resume operations. The Jackman’s expressed gratitude for the assistance and committed to operating in a fully compliant manner, with the association monitoring their declarations and operations through reporting.
Notably, as a condition of receiving assistance, all small miners are required to provide evidence of their gold declarations at the end of the year to ensure the support contributes to formal sector reporting and regulatory compliance. Miners were also reminded that gold must be sold to the Guyana Gold Board or licensed buyers and that all records must be properly maintained.
GGDMA said empowering miners with the necessary tools and promoting compliance are interdependent pillars for building a robust and sustainable mining sector.
