(Kaieteur News) – In a world where news cycles often focus on challenges and hardships, one Guyanese DJ is making a deliberate choice to start the new year differently, with joy, generosity, and an invitation for his community to simply smile.
Tonight, Mix Master Tony, fresh off celebrating his birthday yesterday, is hosting “Smile,” a free international DJ concert at Everest Cricket Club that brings together some of the Caribbean’s finest DJs for an evening of musical celebration. But beyond the impressive lineup and high-energy entertainment, the event carries a deeper message about setting intentions for the year ahead.
“We’re calling this event ‘Smile’ because that’s exactly how I want people to approach 2026,” Tony explained about the concept. “Last year had its challenges for many of us, but there’s something powerful about choosing joy, choosing to smile, and choosing to start fresh. This event is about giving people a reason to feel good as we begin this new chapter.”
For Mix Master Tony, who celebrated his birthday on January 8th, hosting a FREE event the very next day might seem like an unusual way to mark the occasion. However, those familiar with the DJ’s journey understand that giving back has always been central to his philosophy.
“What better way to celebrate another year of life than by creating an experience for the people who’ve supported me?” Tony said. “They’ve given me so much over the years, this is my birthday gift to them.”
Tonight’s event features an extraordinary lineup that transforms Everest Cricket Club into a hub of Caribbean musical excellence.
From Canada comes Dr Jay The Soca Prince, bringing his unique blend of North American energy and Caribbean roots. St Lucia’s Barrie Hype will do what he does best “bring the hype”. Antigua contributes not one but two talented DJs – The Spaniard and DJ Riddim Master – while Trinidad’s DJ Mazel represents the birthplace of soca itself.
Guyana’s own DJ talent is well-represented with Scratch Kid DJ Kev, Selector Biggs, Selector Diamond, and Selector Der joining Mix Master Tony on the decks, ensuring that local flavour remains prominent throughout the evening.
This convergence of Caribbean talent under one roof, or sky in this case, completely free of charge is virtually unprecedented in Guyana’s entertainment landscape.
What distinguishes “Smile” from typical entertainment events is its underlying purpose. In an industry often focused on profit margins and ticket sales, Tony’s decision to offer this caliber of entertainment for free speaks to a different set of values.
“When people come out tonight, I want them to leave feeling lighter, more hopeful, more connected,” Tony shared. “Music has this incredible ability to shift our perspective, to remind us of what’s possible. If we can get a few thousand people smiling together, dancing together, celebrating together, that positive energy ripples out into how they approach the rest of their year.”
The concept of “Smile” also reflects a broader cultural shift toward intentional living and mental wellness. By framing the event around a simple yet profound action, smiling, Tony is encouraging attendees to be mindful of their emotional state and to actively choose positivity.
Tonight’s event continues a pattern established by Mix Master Tony throughout his career. Last August, he hosted “Sunset Solo,” a free four-hour concert at Kingston Seawall Esplanade to celebrate 10 years in entertainment. That event drew hundreds of supporters and set a precedent for the kind of community-focused celebrations Tony envisions.
