Kaieteur Sports – The Annual Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) Boxing Day Horse Race meet is once again turning out to be the signature event for the Christmas Holiday season.
Slated for Friday 26th December at the Club’s venue at Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne, Berbice and with less than a week away from race day, anticipation is high with all systems already in place for the big day.
The much talked about event has attracted a number of sponsors and entries as turfites race to be associated with the event which is expected to be scintillating
It is customary that events held at the famous KMTC are always well executed and another cracking day of racing is anticipated.
Seven races are listed for the day with over $10M in cash trophies and other incentives available for the winners and outstanding performers.
Some 65 horses have already taken entry for the day’s proceedings and the KMTC will be the place for its Boxing Day meet.
Among the sponsors already on board are: Trophy Stall, P and P Insurance Brokers, Colin Elcock Delmur Company Limited, Kharag Family of USA, Nand Persaud and Company Limited, Patsan Trading Establishment, Horse Shoe Racing Services, KSM Investment Limited, Mike’s Pharmacy, N and S Matai the Food Market, Js Supermarket, Poonai Pharmacy, Rohan Auto Sales, Rajesh Ramlakhan, Khanai’s Guyana Electrical Agency, Dalip Trading Limited, Amco Construction, T. Balkarran of USA, Big G Lumber Yard, Majeed Family of The USA, Ramesh Persaud “Rus” and Black Boy of the USA.
The feature event, the Sunny Kharag Memorial Stakes will be sponsored by the Kharag family of the USA. They have pledged close to $4M. The race, which is billed for all horses in Guyana, will see the animals battling over one mile, with the winner set to race away with $2M and a trophy.
The sprint classic event, going over five furlongs, will fetch for the winner’s a take of $700,000 and trophy.
Animals entered in the G and lower event have a first prize of $500,000 and a trophy to aim for.
Other events on the day are for Guyana-Bred 2-year-old maiden animals; One for “I” and lower horses; an event for L and K class horses and the final gallop which will feature L and lower animals.
Winners in those events will all take home $350,000 and a trophy.
According to Matriarch and Honorary President, Mrs. Chan Kennard, she inspected the facilities over the weekend and everything is in excellent condition. She stated that the track is in top shape.
Incentives will be presented to the outstanding jockeys, trainers and stable compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall.
The event will be conducted using the rules of The Kennard Memorial Turf Club. Bugle time is 12:30hrs. (Samuel Whyte)
