Pay de rent first; everything else can wait

Kaieteur News) – Me old granny used to seh, straight up, “Boy, when yuh get yuh salary, de first ting yuh does do is take out de rent money. Pay de landlord first!” She did always hammer dat into we head. Granny seh, if yuh don’t pay yuh rent, de next ting yuh know, yuh gan end up in front of de court wid a eviction notice. Simple as dat.

But nowadays, people don’t listen to no granny advice. Dem get de phone bill, de data bill, de cable, de electricity bill, de bar bill, de sweet woman bill, de car loan bill and de furniture hire purchase bill de wha’ever else. And dem paying off these bills.

But when de landlord come knocking, dem start fuh complain like de man don’t know he work. “But I short a couple thousand,” dem seh. Short? Short? Yuh short because yuh doh listen to me granny!

Listen nah, if yuh living in somebody else house, yuh gatta pay de rent. Ain’t no magic in dis world where yuh could dodge de landlord and still sleep in de house. He ain’t coming to vex yuh for fun. He ain’t coming to check how much data yuh use. All he want is de money dat yuh supposed to pay.

So leh dis be a lesson: pay de rent first, everything else can wait. Phone bill, data, power bill, all dem can wait. But de landlord? He nah wait. If yuh doh pay, yuh move out or yuh face de music. Simple as that. Granny never lie. People don’t want to hear, but de eviction notice don’t lie.

It just happen so that yesterday, a friend call me up and seh she need $50,000 to pay her rent. Now I don’t play when it comes to rent so I seh, “Alright, leh me check meh account, I go call yuh back.”

Before I even check, her sister call me and seh, “Don’t give her any money, she lying to yuh! She plan to use dat $50,000 fuh bail to get her man outta jail so dem could link up for her birthday.”

I sit down, think for a minute, and seh, “Well, leh she go ahead” and I send her de money.

One day later, she call me from de local jail, bawling like a baby, screamin’, “Why I give she counterfeit money?!”
