(Kaieteur News) – The sole breadwinner of a Bushlot Village, Corentyne household is now dead after the vehicle he was traveling in toppled along the Alness Public Road Corentyne Thursday evening.
The dead man has been identified as Davendra Sydney, 31, of Bushlot Village, Corentyne. The driver of the vehicle, a male of John’s Settlement, Corentyne, and who is yet to be identified, is now a patient at the Port Mourant Hospital.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Sarogine Thomby, the mother of Sydney related that she last interacted with her son around 2:00pm Thursday, when he informed her that he was heading out to work. Sydney was a trucker who delivered sand. She said that last evening the family received a message that Thomby was involved in an accident and was at the hospital. By the time they got there, he had already succumbed to his injuries, Thomby disclosed in tears.
“They said the boy (driver) lose control, and he (her son) pitch out from the car and he fall on the ground, and I don’t know if he knock his head, I don’t know.”
Sydney routinely would use public transportation to get to work at Tain, Corentyne, where he would uplift his designated truck for the day’s work, and after return the vehicle before taking public transportation to return home. He was at the time making his way home when the tragedy unfolded.
The distraught mother shared that her only son was the main provider for the home, helping particularly with his sickly father who suffered a stroke.
“He do everything for us. Now I don’t know how I will able live without my son. What will we do?”
She said her son as “a very good person. Nobody can’t talk bad about him.”
The driver of the vehicle was a workmate of Sydney’s, she confirmed. Further, Thomby noted with dismay that the driver in his statement told the police that it was her son who was driving the vehicle. This was confirmed by the police, who she said told her that they cannot alter the statement. The grieving mother stressed that the driver is alive but her son is no more.
She also told reporters that her son sustained massive injuries to his head.
Police reports stated that the motor car was proceeding east along the northern drive lane allegedly at a fast rate when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle which ended up flipping.
A witness confirmed to this publication that the car was indeed speeding.
Consequently, both the driver and Sydney received injuries about their bodies. They were removed from the wreck and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital by passers-by, where Sydney was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was later escorted to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the driver was admitted at the same facility, where his condition is listed as stable. He is also under police guard.
The driver was under the influence of alcohol while behind the wheel; he underwent a breathalyzer test which indicated 77 and 74 micrograms, significantly over the 35-microgram limit.
