Caribbean authorities and regional experts will come together on today for the virtual and in-person launch of a groundbreaking study examining firearms and public health in the region.
The event, hosted by the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS) in collaboration with the Small Arms Survey, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), and the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre, will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the AST Multipurpose Conference Room, Ministry of Health, Port of Spain.
The Pathway to Policy Research Publication: Firearms and Public Health in the Caribbean 2025 offers a data-driven, policy-focused examination of illicit firearms flows, the medical costs of firearm violence, and the emerging public health impacts of gun-related injuries in the Caribbean, CARPHA said in a press invitation. The study builds on the Weapons Compass: The Caribbean Firearms Study (2023) and incorporates data from 26 Caribbean states and territories, including hospital-based research on gunshot injuries and associated economic losses.
The launch will feature remarks and panel discussions from regional leaders, including: Hon. Dr. Lackram Bodoe, Minister of Health, Trinidad and Tobago Hon. Roger Alexander, Minister of Homeland Security, Trinidad and Tobago H.E. Dr. Christophe Eick, German Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago Lt. Col. Michael Jones, Executive Director, CARICOM IMPACS Professor Ivelaw Griffith, Regional Expert Advisory Committee Member Dr. Lisa Indar, Executive Director, CARPHA.
