(Kaieteur News) – The $346 million Bamia Primary School project remains incomplete, with contractors still tasked with minor works before the facility can be handed over, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, confirmed on Monday.
The minister provided an update during her appearance on the GoMoseley Online Radio, hosted by journalist, Gordon Moseley and Allana Bose.
Manickchand said officials from the local government ministry visited the project site on Sunday. “Contractors there have not finished what they are supposed to do. Up to yesterday, the ministry was there, there are some very minor works left to be done,” she relayed.
She said government will not accept an unfinished project.
Having had several meetings with the contractor on what needed to be done, Minister Manickchand said she suspects that even before school closes students could begin occupying the new school building. “But that would require them finishing the work and has to be finished. We are not taking a building that is not finished, but yes I am very disappointed by how long it took,” she mentioned.
The $346 million contract for the Bamia Primary School was awarded to St8tment Investment Inc. in November 2021 and was initially expected to be completed by July 2023. The project has since faced several challenges causing numerous missed deadlines.
The minister made it clear that, “this is something contractors across the country are going to have to understand. If you bid for a project, you came and said that you could do this at this cost, at this time, at this quality, then you have to do it.”
The school is being constructed by St8tment Investment Inc. which was incorporated in March, 2021. It is almost four years since the contract was awarded and five missed deadlines that the school is yet to be completed.
Manickchand had visited the project site in September and had given the contractor up to October to complete all works.
The modern educational building is expected to include 44 classrooms, a fully equipped gymnasium, an auditorium, a science laboratory, a music room, a library, smart classrooms, and modern restroom facilities.
