(Kaieteur News) – Two new water supply systems at Great Falls, Region 10 and Silver Hill, Soesdyke-Linden Highway were on Friday commissioned.
According to the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, approximately 250 residents of Great Falls will now have improved water access from a new $15 million water supply system.
This new system includes the development of the existing water well, the installation of a new photovoltaic pumping system and the rehabilitation of both the well and trestle site.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar and his team joined residents at the commissioning of the new water supply system at Great Falls.
“With these adjustments, residents now receive water directly to their taps, providing particular relief to personnel working at the village primary school and health centre,” subject minister Deodat Indar said at the commissioning ceremony.
Minister Indar said the provision of safe, clean water is a fundamental part of the government’s broader vision of closing the gap between the coast and the hinterland, with the aim of achieving 100% access to potable water nationwide.
“This is about making sure that we deliver to people in the hinterland community, access to water that they can use to cook and drink,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, at Silver Hill, the minister and his team joined residents in commissioning a new $30 million water system. The commissioning of the water supply system marks the end of strenuous walks to the creek for approximately 90% of its residents.
This publication understands that the scope of works included three major components- the drilling of a new water well, the installation of a sustainable photovoltaic pumping system, and the laying of approximately 3km of distribution network.
Minister Indar told residents that the water being produced from the well is low in iron content, which means it is safe for consumption. He said too that over the last five years, the government through the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) drilled about 131 similar wells in remote and hinterland communities, underscoring a commitment to expanding potable water access across the country.
