(Kaieteur News) – A student of the Overwinning Primary School, East Bank Berbice, is now hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), while three others are also nursing injuries after they were involved in an accident on Monday evening.
Dextroy Reid, of Islington, East Bank Berbice, was with his family in a vehicle returning home from the airport when their vehicle crashed into a culvert at the Berbice River Bridge Access Road, Palmyra, East Canje Berbice.
His mother, Rayanna Hikel, told Kaieteur News that she is not fully updated on what really transpired, but confirmed that her son, aunt, sister and her brother-in-law were all in the vehicle at the time. Her initial theory was the vehicle may have swerved from an animal on the road, or may have collided with another vehicle.
Police reports later confirmed that the incident occurred at 11:59pm, involving motor car PAJ 1625, driven by a 57-year-old male of Martin Luther Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, with three occupants.
Preliminary enquiries indicated that the vehicle was proceeding east along the northern drive lane allegedly at a fast rate when the driver reportedly lost control and collided with a culvert on the southern side of the road.
As a result of the collision, the driver and occupants received injuries about their bodies. The injured persons include the child, the 57-year-old driver, and the child’s 30-year-old aunt of Islington Village, East Bank Berbice; and a 66-year-old female of South Ozone Park, New York, U.S.A.
They were assisted by public-spirited citizens and EMT personnel and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where they were seen and treated.
Three of the injured were admitted for fractures and other injuries.
The grade three pupil sustained major injuries; both legs were broken as a result of the accident, and he was immediately transported to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital that evening. However, on Tuesday morning, he was referred to the GPHC where he awaits surgery on Thursday.
The child’s aunt is undergoing emergency surgery at the New Amsterdam Hospital for soft tissue injuries.
Her brother-in-law suffered injuries to his hips, Hikel confirmed. The vehicle has since been lodged as investigations continue.
