Kaieteur News – A 3-megawatt peak (MWp) solar project was on Friday commissioned by Prime Minister, Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips at Hampshire, Corentyne in Region Six, as part of government’s energy strategy which seeks to, among other things, mitigate the effects of climate change.
The US $6 million project was conceptualised as government seeks to add variety to its energy mix and significantly boost its power generation capacity, the prime minister noted.
Prime Minister Phillips, under whose portfolio the project falls, said the venture gives proof that the country is steadily moving towards a smarter, cleaner and more diversified energy system.
“The commissioning of this facility sends a clear signal to not only our people, but to the Latin American and Caribbean region and the rest of the world. It says to them all that Guyana is serious about transitioning to cleaner energy.”
The government, he stated, is endeavoring to cut the country’s fuel import bill while ensuring that energy is affordable for citizens, as the burden of high electricity rates mostly affect the poor.
The Hampshire Solar Farm is one of eight such projects envisioned for the country under the Guyana Power and Light’s US$83.3 million Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL) initiative, earmarked for Regions Two, Five, and Six.
The prime minister explained that Guyana’s energy strategy is built on “three strong pillars,” those being natural gas, as a reliable and low-emission fuel; hydropower, as a long-term source of clean, stable base load energy; and a rapid expansion of solar and wind across the country.
As it becomes operational, the installation will be connected to the Canefield F3 13.8kV feeder, which will enhance the regional power grid.
The prime minister noted that Guyana’s vast oil resources and the benefits should translate to the improvement of the lives of citizens, even as the country seeks to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuel.
The solar farms initiative in Guyana is facilitated through the National Solar Photovaltiac Project of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
