(Kaieteur News) – The government through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), an agency under the Ministry of Housing is gearing up to spend over $5 billion for the construction of truck parking facilities in Regions Three, Four and Six.
Bids for the projects were opened recently at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office which revealed that CH&PA will be constructing facilities at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD) in Region Three; Block ‘HH’ Hope-Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) in Region Four; at Smithson’s Place (No. 8 Village), Palmyra, East Bank Canje River; and at Block #2, No. 75 Village, Corentyne, Region Six.
The projects in these areas have been divided into four lots each.
This publication understands that this initiative aims to address the issue of sand trucks and other larger vehicles associated with the construction sector parking along Public Roads.
During a site visit last year October for a similar facility at Block 18, Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Minister of Housing, Collin Croal stated that due to a recent boom in the construction sector, there has been an increase in larger trucks required for the timely delivery of construction materials. “In light of this boom, we needed to find a solution for these trucks. We have identified 15 acres of land on the East Bank of Demerara that will be developed. We plan to implement a similar project on the East Coast of Demerara, resulting in a total of 30 acres for Region 4,” the Minister explained.
He mentioned at the time also that similar facilities will also be established in Region Three and Region Six, as well as one along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway. “For the facility on the highway, we are considering a location near the junction, which will allow trucks to temporarily stop while waiting to load or serve as a rest area for overnight stays,” he added.
